Q: can this be used on laminate wood
a month ago- A: We appreciate your interest! To ensure proper drying, Rust-Oleum Varathane Whitewash Wood Stain needs to be applied to a wood surface. It will not properly penetrate laminate or properly dry. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3a month agoHelpful?
Q: Can I cover this with a poly. If so water based or oil.
a month ago- A: Happy to help, Mike! Yes, Rust-Oleum Varathane Whitewash Wood Stain can be topcoated with a polyurethane after 1 hour. We recommend Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Ultimate Polyurethane for a crystal clear finish. An oil-based finish can be used, but it will add an amber hue to the finish. https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/rust-oleum-1-qt-crystal-clear-varathane-water-based-interior-ultimate-polyurethane-satin-2344772 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3a month agoHelpful?
Q: Does it need to be diluted with water
2 months ago- A: Kevin, happy to help! No, Rust-Oleum Varathane Whitewash Wood Stain is a ready-to-use product and does not need to be diluted before use. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 102 months agoHelpful?
Q: Can this be used on painted wood?
5 months ago- A: Happy to clear things up, Lynn! Rust-Oleum Varathane Whitewash Wood Stain is suitable for use on bare or stained wood surfaces. It is not suitable for use on painted wood, as this stain will not properly penetrate or dry. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 35 months agoHelpful?
Q: We’re having trouble with yellow tannins in our pine shiplap boards showing through regular paint. Would they come through with this paint?
8 months ago- A: Tina, we are here to help! Rust-Oleum Varathane Whitewash Wood Stain is not considered a paint but a penetrating stain. It needs to be applied to a bare wooden surface. Instead, we recommend using Rust-Oleum Zinsser Cover Stain Oil-Based Primer. This will help with blocking the tannins and can be topcoated with a water- or oil-based paint after an hour. https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/rust-oleum-zinsser-cover-stain-oil-based-low-voc-100-gal-271448-1485295 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 108 months agoHelpful?
Q: Want sheen
9 months ago- A: Happy to help, Marc! Rust-Oleum Varathane Whitewash Wood Stain is a penetrating product. That being said, it will not form a filming product and will not have sheen. It is considered a semi-transparent stain that provides a classic, natural color that allows wood grain to come through. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 109 months agoHelpful?
Q: I want a dead flat or very mate protective clear coat over it, once applied. What do you recommend that won’t add shine to protect the finish? Thanks!
11 months ago- A: We're happy to help! To add some extra protection on top of Rust-Oleum Varathane Whitewash Wood Stain, we recommend top coating with Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Polyurethane. This is provides a protective crystal clear finish and is available in a matte sheen. https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/rust-oleum-1-qt-crystal-clear-varathane-water-based-interior-ultimate-polyurethane-satin-2344772 -Rust-Oleum Product Support 1411 months agoHelpful?
Q: Do you have to sand
a year ago- A: Happy to help, Eileen! To ensure proper penetration of Rust-Oleum Varathane Whitewash, the surface needs to be sanded if applying it to bare wood. This includes sanding the surface with 120-grit sandpaper and progressing to 220-grit sandpaper. Failure to stand the surface may result in improper application and an uneven finish. If applying it over stained wood, sanding may be needed depending on the final look you hope to achieve! - Rust-Oleum Product Support 10a year agoHelpful?
