Rated 3 out of 5 by from Thread sizes. I have several Rubbermaid stock tanks and they state the drain plug size is 1 & 1/2 inch. The plug size is very odd in that it is somewhere between 1 inch and 1 & 1/4 inch. I would say that it is about 1 & 1/8 inch or so which you cannot fit any other adapter to such as a 1 inch or 3/4 inch National Pipe Thread item such as a 3/4 inch spigot or other plumbing connector because they have chosen this size or have simply made it up. I have turned down a 1 & 1/4 by 3/4 inch female NPT fitting on a grinder to where it will fit in the hole tightly. I then glued it in place with Permatex Nr. 2 (non hardening) gasket sealer. Now I can install any 3/4 inch item such as a faucet, etc. I also use Permatex Nr. 2 liberally on the large rubber gasket (both sides) and some on the big nut threads to keep this thing from leaking. Since it is non-hardening, it can be taken down if necessary.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Locally available at a great price My 20 year old plug finally cracked. I was so glad to find this on Tractor Supply's website, ordered it there for pickup and had it the same day. Price was substantially lower than other suppliers.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Stock Tank Drain Plug is a real pain I replaced my drain plug and the new one leaks badly. The square knob(?) is very soft and is already chewed up just trying to install it! What tool are you supposed to use to tighten it? The replacement is worse than the original I replaced. I am very disappointed and would not recommend it to anyone!

what tool do I need to use to open and close the drain plug.. I just got a replacement and the square top is so soft the corners are already chewed off.

Asked by: Icandoit
It would likely be best to use a pair of pliers. If you are trying to remove the plug altogether, remove the plastic nut on the inside with a wrench and tap the outside of the plug with a rubber mallet until the plug pops out.
