I bought one of these 5 years ago and have pretty much left it on my weight distribution hitch for the entire time. The outside has rusted pretty bad, but if you lube the lock mechanism and keep the rubber cap on, the lock internals will hold up just fine. I am just now replacing it after 5 years of pretty much continuous use.
