- This spreading evergreen shrub has horizontal branching and can grow 2-3 ft. tall and wide at maturity. For the first few years of its life, this growing evergreen will stay around 12 in. tall until becoming a mature plant. This acid loving plant takes many years of establishing its root system.
- This miniature gardenia shrub has beautiful petite white flower buds that bloom in late spring to early summer. The dark green leaves contrast nicely when the fragrant blooms fill your garden designs during the blooming season.
- If the flowering evergreen Gardenia jasminoides radicans receives regular fertilization it will maintain a dark green foliage color through spring and fall. Sometimes yellow leaves appear when lacking in soil nutrition. A slightly acidic fertilizer or acidic potting soil with a pH of 6.0 or lower is best to amend your surrounding soil. Be sure to check out our Liquid Gardenia Fertilizer for optimum nutrition.
- Although tolerant to a wide range of soil types, the dwarf gardenia performs best in well drained, acidic soils that retain moisture. Can be grown in full sun to partial shade, but will maintain its gardenia fragrance from the blooms if provided with shade during the sunniest times of the year. The morning sun is perfect with afternoon shade.
- The dwarf Radicans gardenia is easy to maintain and is even heat and drought tolerant, and also resistant to pests and disease. Perfect for USDA growing zones 7-10. It is not the most cold hardy and does best in the southern United States.
- An annual prune to maintain shape as desired. Deadhead spent gardenia flower blossoms or faded flowers to encourage new growth.
- To plant your gardenia hedge, dig a hole the size of the root ball. Mulching with organic matter such as peat moss or compost will help retain moisture. Outdoor plants love growing conditions with high humidity. This will help prevent bud drop. You may grow this shrub as a potted plant. It will need re-potting every few years when it exceeds its planting container. Be sure to maintain a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to keep roots cool and to help the root system grow strong. This flowering shrub is one of the easiest gardenia varieties to care for.
