The botanical name of this plant is illicium parviflorum hedge and it is native to north central Florida. Generally considered a large shrub or small anise tree if pruned to that desired shape.
This plant or evergreen tree gets very large throughout maturity. Can grow up to 10 to 15 ft. tall and 6-10 ft. wide. It makes a great privacy bush when planted in a location that deems it so. The yellow anise hedge also can provide protection from the wind as a windbreak.
The Yellow Anise bushs elliptical-shaped leaves give off an aromatic scent of anise when crushed and the shrub features olive green subtle flowers in the spring growing season, followed by star-shaped seedpods.
Although it is similar to Star Anise bush, the licorice scented seedpods and leaves are not edible fruit and should not be consumed. The central Florida shrub is considered a moderate to the rapid grower and can spread by suckering and forming colonies of the root mass.
This species of Anise illicium does well in sandy, acidic soils but will adapt to other soil types as well such as moist soils or dry soils. Plants that are grown in shady areas have rich, dark green leaves, whereas plants grown in the sun tend to be more yellow green.
This cultivar will remain upright and tight in full sun, and when grown in part shade takes on a more relaxed habitat with darker leaves and fewer blooms. These plants grow and thrive in the southern United States. The USDA plant hardiness zones are 8-10.
