OvaMed (Altrenogest) is a medication used for estrus suppression in mares. Available by prescription only, it helps regulate and predict estrus cycles, thereby optimizing breeding management. OvaMed is administered orally and is supplied in a 1,000 mL bottle.How it Works

Altrenogest works to produce a progestational effect.

Special Precautions

• Administration to rats during pregnancy in the embryonic stages at multiple times recommended doses resulted in female genitalia masculinization.
• Therapy with synthetic or natural gestagen can worsen existing "smoldering" or low-grade inflammation of the uterus into fulminating infections in some patients.
• Not for use in mares with a history (current or previous) of inflammation in the uterus (chronic, subacute, or acute endometriosis).
• If you are a women of childbearing age, use extreme caution in the handling of this product. Allowing absorption can cause menstrual cycle disruption or pregnancy prolongation. Direct skin contact should be avoided. Accidental skin spillage must be immediately washed off using soap and water.
• Wear protective gloves to handle this product, as it readily absorbs through unbroken skin.
• Not for use in horses intended for food slaughter.
• Keep this and all medications away from children.
• Only for oral administration to mares.

If any of the following apply to you, do not handle this product.

• If you are or might be pregnant
• If you have a thromboembolic disorder or thrombophlebitis, or a history of either
• If you have coronary artery or cerebral vascular disease
• If you are a woman with suspected or known breast carcinoma
• If you suspect or know that you have estrogen-dependent neoplasia
• If you are a woman with undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
• If you have a malignant or benign tumor that developed while using any product that contains estrogen, including an oral contraceptive

Side Effects

When administered at the correct dose, side effects are rare. However, the following reactions may occur:

• Exacerbated uterine infection in mares with a existing conditions of uterine inflammation
• Moderate changes in liver enzymes
• Moderate changes in potassium blood levels
• Moderate changes in blood calcium levels

Any medication can result in an anaphylactic or allergic reaction. This may be characterized by:

• Agitation
• Respiration changes
• Hives
• Swelling

This reaction can be serious and life-threatening. Urgent veterinary attention should be sought.

If you horse experiences these or any other reaction, immediately speak to your veterinarian.
