It thrives in USDA zones 7 through 10 in part shade to full shade with moist, well-drained soil and tolerates some sun if moisture is maintained. Use it as a specimen, screen or hedge in woodland borders, foundation plantings or shaded garden backdrops; its rounded habit and dense foliage make it effective for privacy as well. Its deer resistance adds further value where browsing may be a concern.

    Attractive deer safe evergreen for full sun

    I was looking for a native broadleaf evergreen that can take full sun as part of a privacy screen with sweetbay magnolia, so I found Florida anise "forest green." Plants arrived looking great and about to bloom. I planted them among the sweetbays and though they are two feet tall right now, they will grow big. Deer have shown zero interest in eating their shiny, fragrant leaves and now they have small yellow flowers. I might be the only one growing this shrub in Maryland but I bet that changes.
