- A: Hi Tamm, The Ice Eliminator is designed to be submerged in water at all times. If you believe the bird bath will run dry on a regular basis, then please unplug it. If it is only going to happen a couple times a year, that shouldn't be an issue as long as it doesn't run for days outside of water.2 years agoHelpful?

Deicer from Tractor Supply

I have used this product for several years to keep the birdbaths free from freezing anytime the temperature dropped too low . It had to be flat so it would not stick out above the shallower bird baths. It had stopped working this winter so I bought another one through Tractor Supply. Other stores were out and did not tell me anything about them being able to order online. Tractor Supply was very helpful and did the ordering for me, so I just had to go pick it up.

This is only my second winter with this K&H Super Ice Eliminator Bird Bath Deicer and I am disappointed that the electrical cord is so stiff that it does not lay in the water completely. And the paint has flaked off in several places and it ends up in the water! I am looking for the kind I had before which had a metal coil around the cord so it would lie flat in the water and I had it for many years without any problems! On the other hand, when it stayed in the water, it kept the water from freezing!

80 w deicers

I have bought 80W deicers for years. They don't last forever, but they serve very well for a long time - even during the POLAR FREEZE years ago. I currently have 3. During the winter I add 2 gallons to every "birdbath" every day. The animals drink a lot. Heavy duty extension cords serve well with the green tubes which protect the connections.
Yes, I recommend this product.
