Zinc Extended Prong Cotter Pins secure two items together through the use of a common hole. The bulbous end stops the pin from moving all the way through the hole when inserted. To secure in place, bend the open tips using pliers.

It is a cotter pin. If you bought the right size, it does its job. Can say with certainty, but the odds are that I'll lose it before it wears out.
