Cyclosporine Capsules are indicated for the control of atopic dermatitis in pets. Effective in treating conditions like eczema, cyclosporine helps alleviate symptoms such as itching and inflammation, providing relief from discomfort. The drug targets the immune system cells that are directly responsible for the allergic reaction, making it an effective treatment option for many pets. While cyclosporine is FDA-approved only for use in dogs, veterinarians may sometimes find it appropriate to prescribe this eczema medication for cats as well. Sold in 30 ct. containers. How it Works
Cyclosporine interferes with the production of helper T-lymphocyte interleukin. Other immune suppressing medications kill immune system cells, but Cyclosporine works differently.
Special Precautions
Cyclosporine is a powerful systemic immunosuppressant, which can increase susceptibility to neoplasia development and infection. If your pet exhibits any of the following symptoms, immediately contact your veterinarian.
- Runny nose
- Coughing
- Sneezing
- Tiredness
- Painful urination
- Fever (over 103°)
Overdose Information
In case of overdose, contact your closest emergency pet hospital.
Side Effects
The most frequently experienced reaction to Cyclosporine is stomach upset, which may include diarrhea, vomiting, and/or loss of appetite.
Tips
Cyclosporine is not FDA-approved for use in cats, but it is frequently prescribed for the treatment of cats.

Cyclosporine USP
Cyclosporine is generally given once or twice daily depending on the disease being treated. Dogs with atopic dermatitis begin with once daily usage and then taper to a schedule more like every other day or less. Because the dose one swallows orally does not reliably produce a predictable blood level, therapeutic blood level monitoring is often recommended with oral cyclosporine use. A blood cyclosporine level is usually checked a day or two into therapy and then every 2-4 weeks. The lowest blood level of the day should be 100-500 ng/ml in dogs and 250-1,000 ng/ml in cats, though this in some part depends on the laboratory running the test. In using cyclosporine for the treatment of atopic dermatitis, blood levels are generally not monitored because it is the concentration of drug in the patient's skin (not the blood) which is pertinent and there is no way to measure skin levels of cyclosporine. While it's not approved by the FDA for cats, it is commonly prescribed by veterinarians to treat cats.
