Carprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve joint pain and inflammation caused by conditions like osteoarthritis, arthritis, hip dysplasia, or post-surgery recovery. It also acts as an effective fever reducer. Carprofen is available to dogs only and is sold by the tablet in varying strengths. How it Works
The mechanism of action of carprofen, like that of other NSAIDs, is believed to be associated with the inhibition of cyclooxygenase activity.
Special Precautions
Periodic liver and kidney function tests should be performed for dogs taking Carprofen. Carprofen should not be used in dogs exhibiting previous hypersensitivity to carprofen. Do NOT use on cats or on pregnant or nursing animals. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose Information
In case of overdose, contact your nearest emergency animal hospital.
Side Effects
Carprofen, like other drugs of its class, is not free from adverse reactions. Owners should be advised of the potential for adverse reactions and be informed of the clinical signs associated with drug intolerance. Adverse reactions may include decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, dark or tarry stools, increased water consumption, increased urination, pale gums due to anemia, yellowing of gums, skin or white of the eye due to jaundice, lethargy, incoordination, seizure, or behavioral changes.
Storage
Keep the caplets in a cool/dry place.
Active Ingredients
Generic medications may vary from one order to the next by size, color and shape depending on manufacturer. Customers may receive the same drug under the names of various manufacturers or generic brands. Common Brand Name(s), 'Carprovet, Vetprofen, Novox, Carprieve, Rimadyl, Quellin'.
Tips
All dogs should undergo a thorough history and physical examination before initiation of therapy using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
