Special Precautions

• Do not administer to animals with liver disease.
• Do not administer to lactating or pregnant females.
• Do not administer to breeding pets.
• Closely follow your veterinarian's treatment instructions.
• This medication depresses impulse formation and conduction velocity in cardiac muscle (negative inotropic). Use with caution in animals with cardiac shock or heart failure.
• Overdose typically results in bradycardia and profound hypotension. If promptly recognized, gut emptying is recommended.

Side Effects

Infrequently, the following adverse reactions have been reported in cats:

• Weight loss
• Increased heart rate
• Lethargy
• Drop in levels of blood potassium
• Elevated renal blood parameters

In only 8.5% of dogs, gingival hyperplasia has occurred. This is a condition in which the gums overgrow, creating extra space for infection and periodontal bacteria. In these cases, the condition has resolved within 6 months of stopping the medication.

Tips

Carefully administer this medication in the frequency and manner your veterinarian prescribes. If a dose is missed, it can lead to a sudden increase in blood pressure. This sudden spike can lead to blindness, kidney damage, or seizures. Do not double the next dose. Administer the missed dose as soon as possible, unless it is time for the next dose. In this case, skip the missed dose and resume the regular schedule. Never administer two doses at once.
