Yes the smell is strong, but it doesn't take long to fade. Definitely wash your hands after use, or maybe even wear gloves when applying. Reminds me of Aloe and at first I wasn't sure iif it would be strong enough but with in honestly minutes my ankle was not throbbing and felt better
