Best Of FAQ
A socket extension is a bar that connects between a socket and a ratchet or other socket-driving tool. It has a square opening on one end and a square drive on the other.
A standard socket extension has a straight, rigid body. A universal joint has a pivoting connection that lets the socket sit at an angle to the driving tool. They’re separate types of socket accessories.
Wobble refers to the shape of the extension’s square drive end. That connection allows some angular movement between the socket and extension, unlike a standard straight connection.
Many socket extensions have a spring-loaded detent ball that engages the socket to hold it in place. Some designs have a locking mechanism with a separate release. The connection style varies by extension.
Keep extensions together in a divided drawer, tool tray or dedicated rack. Group straight extensions, wobble extensions and joint accessories separately so everything has a spot in your shop or truck toolbox.
