Q&As

1 - 4 of 4 Questions

Q: Will this shred baled flakes of alfalfa hay

1 Answer
  • A: Hello, yes, the SuperHandy 15-Amp Electric Leaf Mulcher (GUO056) can shred baled flakes of alfalfa hay, and many owners specifically use it to grind alfalfa for older horses. However, because the machine is primarily designed for dry leaves and small twigs, it requires a careful technique to avoid jamming the motor or tripping the internal breaker.

1 Answer
  • A: The SuperHandy 0.5 in. Diameter 15A Electric Leaf Mulcher Shredder (GUO056) is not recommended for shredding pine cones or gum balls. Good machine.

Worked as designed. Well packaged. Chopped leaves and small sticks up into small pieces. Good as long as you don't put thicker sticks in it. We plan to mainly use it to shred leaves.

Yes, I recommend this product.

It’s hungry

I love my super handy electric leaf mulcher. It chews up anything i have fed it, including last years garden refuse and kitchen scraps , making composting easy and fast. It’s easy to move around and has the largest hopper of any I looked at.

Solid build, but underpowered and frustrating

I had high hopes for this mulcher. Right out of the box, it makes a strong first impression. Assembly was straightforward, and the unit itself feels solid and well-built. The steel housing and blade design give you the sense that it’s going to handle real garden cleanup without an issue. That wasn’t our experience. On the first test run, it became clear that this machine needs to be babied. It works—but only under very controlled conditions. Small amounts of dry leaves and soft debris go through fine, but anything beyond that causes problems. We tried feeding in small twigs and some light root material, and the machine bogged down almost immediately. The motor would slow, then shut off, requiring a reset. This happened repeatedly. Despite the “heavy-duty” blade design and 1800W motor, it doesn’t maintain power once material is introduced. Another issue is the Large Debris Guard. It tends to trap mulch as it exits, leading to frequent clogging. We often had to stop and use a stick to clear the buildup just to keep things moving. To get consistent results, we had to feed the machine very slowly with small amounts of soft material. At that point, it works—but the process becomes inefficient and a bit tedious. For context, some reviews mention handling sticks up to an inch in diameter. That has not been our experience at all. Even small twigs caused the unit to struggle. The advertised 17:1 reduction ratio refers to volume reduction (how much it shrinks leaves), not processing power. It does reduce volume well when used within its limits—but those limits are fairly narrow. For the price we paid, I expected more capability and less hands-on management. This may work for someone strictly processing dry leaves in small batches, but if you're dealing with mixed garden debris—stalks, twigs, roots—it falls short. Bottom line: well-built, but underpowered and easily clogged. Useful in a limited role, but not worth the price for broader garden cleanup.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Like Metal Blades

I love the product and I have used it for about 18 months now. I have been very pleased with results. I feel the metal blades are superior to nylon. You need to be careful about clogging if leaves or debris is wet, but with a little patience you'll love the product.
