Q&As

1 - 10 of 36 Questions

Q: How much room between the gate and post is needed?

1 Answer
  • A: This latch is designed for a clearance of 1 inch to 1-5/8 inches between the gate and the post. While shimming can help for gaps up to 2 inches, a 4-inch gap would likely be too large for standard installation

Q: What size are the holes used to attach latch to wooden post? Since bolts aren't included for that piece and there's no mention in specs.

1 Answer
  • A: The latching mechanism requires four bolts for installation, and reviewers recommend using 1/4" x 3" wood lag bolts or large exterior-rated screws to attach it to a wooden post.

Q: The bolt only just goes through to the other hole when inserted. It’s not long enough to then attach the nut to the bolt. Is there a trick to this that I am unaware of, or did I buy one with incorrect bolt lengths included?

1 Answer
  • A: It is possible the included bolts are too short for your specific installation. Some users have found the provided bolts to be insufficient and recommend purchasing longer lag bolts, hex screws, or 1/4" x 3" wood lag bolts separately to ensure a secure fit to the post.

Q: will this fit a 3.5 in./4 in round post

Q: What is the clearance required between post and gate?

1 Answer
  • A: For the gate latch they will want a maximum of about 1- 5/8” and a minimum of about 1”. If the gate and the fence post are further apart than the maximum like 1.75” – 2” then the portion that attaches to the fence post can be shimmed out to make that distance smaller.

Great Lockable Gate Latch

I have a fenced area on my property where the previous owner kept their dogs. The steel gate leading to this area was only latched with a piece of chain and metal bracket. I bought the SpeeCo Two-Way Lockable Gate Latch to eliminate the piece of chain allowing the gate to be securely latched while still opening in either direction. The latch has been great. As you can see in the pictures the fence post the gate latches to is not plumb. I added a 2x4 block to the post to take up the excess space between the gate and post. The latch kit provides for use with a 1 3/8" gate tubing, which I used. The fit was perfect on the steel gate tubing with the adapters. The kit does not provide screws to attach the main latch to the post which was fine with me. I used 2 5/8" Timberlock bolts to attach the 2x4 block to the wooden post and then to attach the main latch assembly to the 2/4 block. I like the Timberlocks because they have an aggressive thread and a large flat head. This latch is working out perfectly. It feel solid when I close the gate and is easy to unlatch in either direction.

Beware of bolts!

The design is good and the latch works well. If you buy this product use a secondary latch or replace the bolts. The grade five bolts supplied fail, After only being installed for two weeks I found the top bolt undone (what I thought in the early AM hours). Fearing someone was tampering with the gate I put a lock and chain on it. Later that evening after work I returned to find the bottom bolt missing. After some searching I found the bolt a few feet away. Upon examining the bolts I discovered both bolts had sheered off at the nut. I never did find the nut ends. Thank goodness for the chain I put on the gate earlier that morning or my miniature horse could have gotten out. It had been raining for two days so you could see any hoof prints in the mud and she had not been within a foot of the gate, so I am sure she was not pushing on it.
