Disappointing lifespan exposed to sunlight

I bought a pack 2 years ago to strap down firewood tarp
All these straps had to be discarded due to extreme cracking. EPDM rubber lasts up to 40 years on commercial building roofs. Why can't it last 5 years as a tarp strap?
