Selegiline Capsules are commonly prescribed for dogs diagnosed with specific forms of Cushing's disease or those exhibiting signs of cognitive dysfunction, such as senility. Selegiline has been shown to help alleviate symptoms associated with these conditions and improve activity levels. It's sold by the capsule.How it Works
Selegiline HCL works by inhibiting monoamine oxidase, which helps in the treatment of cognitive disorders (e.g., senility) and Cushing's by raising dopamine levels.
Special Precautions
Note safe for pregnant/nursing pets, or for pets taking antidepressants. Be sure to let your veterinarian know if your pet is pregnant, lactating, taking other medications, or currently suffers from other conditions.
Overdose Information
Immediately contact your closest emergency animal hospital or vet.
Side Effects
A 5% rate of adverse reaction/drug rejection has been reported. Effects may include:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Appetite loss
- Itchy skin
- Tremors
- Drooling
- Lethargy
- Disorientation
- Diminished hearing
- Restlessness
Store in a dry and cool environment. Avoid direct sunlight.
Tips
If being used to ameliorate cognitive dysfunction, this drug should be administered alongside a behavior modification plan. Consult your veterinarian for more information about what these plans entail.

Selegiline hydrochloride, USP 5 mg.
Other Ingredients: Citric Acid, Anhydrous Lactose, Magnesium Stearate, and Microcrystalline Cellulose.
Use as directed by your veterinarian. The usual dose for Cushing's disease is 0.45 mg/pound by mouth once a day in the morning. The usual dose for canine cognitive dysfunction is 0.2-0.45 mg/pound. Do not use in pregnant or nursing animals. Do not give more of this medication than is prescribed without consulting your veterinarian. Selegiline may cause drowsiness or dizziness.
