A good gun, IF you know what to replace first.

This is an interesting and fun pellet rifle. After burning through one rifle in less than 100 shots, we figured out some good tricks to keep a second replacement rifle working. First, it has much power, it shoots well, it is a fun gun, but there are a few things an owner should be aware of. For starters, the scope is trash, it is nothing more than a few pieces of loose, laser cut, aluminum foil strips, formed into what looks like cross hairs inside the scope, which of course move greatly when you shoot. With the first rifle, it took 50 - 100 shots (ridiculous) to site it in, before we knew the issue with the scope. Even after site in, it was unpredictable, a foot of variance at times, which is why we kept going back to the drawing board with a site-in taking 10xs more shots than it should. With this sort of variance, it was impossible to use this rifle to encourage and build confidence of a new young shooter, much less have fun shooting. We couldn't figure out why our siting kept moving to the left. Taking apart the scope, we found no etched glass, no way to truly site it in with loose foil strips moving inside the scope every time you shoot, I've never seen anything like this. Either replace the scope or just use the iron sites, which work well. Secondly, you need to replace both bolts on the forestock, near the break action. Go to a hardware store and get the stainless steel 5mm (grade 8 doesn't seem to be available in this size) and a couple of washers for each side. If you do not, you will have bolts broken off within 50 - 100 shots, as well as washers that will dig into the plastic of the gun and keep digging with every shot. I say 50 - 100 shots, because after we finally had the scope kinda/sorta sited in, both bolts sheered right off, and we headed back to the store. Tractor Supply, by the way, has amazing customer service, couldn't be more pleased. Also, be aware that you need to keep tightening (or at least checking) these same replaced bolts every 10 shots, else they will back out with the recoil vibration and still crack the gun -- or use locktite. Thirdly, inside the gun, the nitrogen gas piston creates much heat when fired, melting the synthetic plastic inside of the stock. So far, that has not caused an issue, but something to be aware of. If I was Ruger, I would take my name off this gun, it is an insult to their otherwise prestigious reputation.

the rifle came with a scope but no scope mounts. How do you expect to mount the scope with no mounts...

Don’t waste your time.

This air rifle is an absolute pile of junk. Within a couple hundred rounds, the main bolt behind the trigger guard securing the chassis to the receiver and barrel assembly snapped off flush inside the lug that goes into the receiver, and as a result the entire rear end of the receiver lifted out when I went to open the break action, bending the rear lug and the other 2 front bolts that hold the front end of the receiver to the chassis. I can’t find parts, the lug is a specialty part that Ruger doesn’t appear to even sell, and now the receiver is damaged where the lug and the rear chassis bolt threads in and the rifle went in the trash. How cheap do bolts have to be to shear from the recoil force of a .17 cal air gun? They really can’t spare the 3 extra cents per bolt to use grade 8 hardware. I really enjoy my Ruger rimfire and center fire rifles, I’m not sure what they’re thinking with these airguns or who is making them for Ruger, but I recommend spending the extra $50 and getting a good old 10/22. Save yourself the headache.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Worth the price

Being the owner of multiple high and low end pellet rifles, I feel I can give an honest review. I've always loved Ruger rifles and after I saw this in my local Tractor Supply, I had to have it! Once I got the rifle home, I pulled it straight from the box and took it to my shooting bench. I ran 100 of my cheapest pellets through it, checking every 10 shots for defects or loose screws. After the first 100 shots, I put the scope that came with it on and began sighting it in. I was sceptical because of the reviews and also my personal experience with these cheap little scopes that come with these type rifles. After an afternoon of plinking 25-40 yards, here is what I learned: Gamo Red Fire pellets run amazing in this gun, the scope is good but not great, and for the price, I'd give this rifle a solid 4 out of 5. I've already dispatched many birds, 2 racoons, a possum, a crow at 50 yards, and 6 squirrels. All with the original scope. If you're on the fence about this gun, I'm here to tell you it's wonderful for the price. Please do thorough research on break barrel pellet rifles before buying to avoid some of the issues these guns have. As of now, the original scope is holding zero and I plan to keep it on.

Yes, I recommend this product.
