Q: Is it heat treated to kill cocoons

1 Answer
  • A: Pennington does not explicitly state that their Compressed Pine Straw is heat-treated to kill insect cocoons or larvae. Instead, the product uses a proprietary cleaning and packaging process called PurePine Technology. This mechanical process is designed to remove 99% of sticks, stones, and debris during the packaging of the long-leaf pine needles.

Great product.

This product offers a nice alternative to wood chip mulch, especially around evergreens and other acid loving plants. It makes a solid mat that doesn't blow away. After a rain it takes on a beautiful natural red color. I think the coverage in sq ft per manufacturer is overly optimistic. To get 2-3 inches depth, i find one bale covers about 50 sq ft.
