Q: Will this primer adhere to galvanized roof panels?
5 years ago1 Answer
- A: Majic Tractor, Truck & Implement Primers (Red Oxide, or Sandable Gray) are industrial oil/alkyd coatings that are designed for, and provide excellent adhesion & protection to ferrous metal surfaces – Not recommended for galvanized surfaces. To Paint galvanized panels with Majic T&I Enamels, galvanized surfaces must be cleaned and solvent wiped (to remove surface oils), etched/profiled with an acid based metal prep solution, then primed with an appropriate galvanized metal primer (non-cementitious), or a compatible self-etching primer, in accordance to manufacturer’s application & re-coat instructions.5 years agoHelpful?
Q: can majic applied over apoxy primer
5 years ago1 Answer
- A: Majic Tractor, Truck & Implement Primers and Enamels are high quality, hard-drying alkyds that exhibit excellent adhesion, corrosion resistance and protection to surfaces subjected to hard use, and harsh exposures… While Majic T&I Enamels are designed for use over Majic T&I Primers, painting either over a properly prepared epoxy primer should pose no problems (though adhesion testing is strongly recommended). The epoxy primer must be clean, dry and free of chalk, dirt, grease/oils, or other surface contaminants that may interfere with the adhesion of Majic T&I Products – and light sanding of the epoxy primer would be recommended to create a “profile” for a better, stronger, mechanical bond between 2 product films. Please carefully read, and follow, all label directions regarding application of Majic T&I Products, with special attention paid to the recommended applied thickness of each coating (thin applications @ 2.5 – 3.0 mils wet), and the allowable re-coat times for each (minimum 24 hours between coats). Too heavy an application, and/or re-coating too soon will result in a film that won’t dry “hard” for several days…or longer.5 years agoHelpful?
Q: Do I need to sand between each coat ? What about if I use the primer, will it need to be sanded also ?
6 years ago1 Answer
- A: Because these are oil/alkyd products, it is always good practice to sand between coats with a very fine grit paper (recommended 350 grit), or fine Scotch Brite pad. Light sanding not only removes surface irregularities (such as dust that may have settled on the surface during drying), but also aids in inter-coat adhesion, and helps to maintain a uniform & consistent finish application.6 years agoHelpful?
Q: Hi If I'm going to use a brush to apply the primer - do I need to thin the primer or put it on just like it is in the can - once mixed properly ???
6 years ago1 Answer
- A: To apply Majic T&I Red Oxide Primer by brush, first mix the contents of the gallon, thoroughly, until the product is a smooth and uniform consistency. Then, for best results, I would recommend thinning Majic T&I Red Oxide Primer with Majic Reducer, #8-0750, at a ratio of approximately 10%, apply in thin coats and allow 24 hours to dry before applying additional coats of primer, or top-coating with a finish enamel. The purpose for reduction is to help manage/control the recommended application thickness, and to aid in the “flow & leveling” of the applied film (too heavy an application, and/or re-coating too soon may result in a film that won’t dry “hard” for several days or longer).6 years agoHelpful?
Q: Can this product be painted directly on rusted surfaces as a primer?
8 years ago1 Answer
- A: Our best recommendation is to remove as much rust as possible through sanding, wire-brushing, grinding, blasting etc. – if rust cannot be removed by such mechanical means, then the second best option may be to convert the active rust to a more stable surface - commercial rust converters turn rust, or iron oxide, to a more paintable surface such as iron tannate, or iron phosphate, which can then be primed, and painted, as clean steel. Majic Tractor & Implement Primers are high solids, heavily pigmented, and contain as much corrosion resistance components as is legal – but necessary to apply directly to rust – and to control the spread of rust - the product must be thin enough to penetrate deeply through-out the pits & contours created by rust, then fully encapsulate active rust as a barrier to reaction with oxygen.8 years agoHelpful?

Great
I have read good and bad reviews about this brand. I went to their website and mixed the hardener and reducer like they recommend and sanded the metal. Sprayed great and after 24 hours rock hard, and looks great to be a primer. Very happy with it, think others had problems because not mixing right.

Tractor Supply cost me a lot of work. Not cool.
I bought this primer to paint the bed on an old flat bed pickup that I bought. I purchased the gallon of red oxide primer from Tractor Supply on Saturday. I have never purchased paint before from a store that didn't shake it up for you, so I didn't know what to expect. I bought a mixing attachment for my drill to mix the paint.
When I opened the primer can, the paint had separated completely. The top of the liquid was grey. I started trying to mix the paint and the solids in the bottom of the can clumped up all around the mixer. It literally took about ten minutes or more of mixing with the drill to smooth the paint out, but it did smooth out eventually.
I actually thought that the primer may be bad but as I stated I have not bought paint before that wasn't shaken up for me so for all I know this is what paint is like when it is not shaken.
Cut to the chase, I rolled on the primer and it has been three full days since I applied it, yet the primer is still soft and has not dried in several spots on the truck bed. It looks like I am going to have to sand off the primer in multiple spots and recoat with another product.
I should have at least one coat of paint on this truck by now and it is going to rain tonight. I guess that's what I get for buying anything really from Tractor Supply. God forbid there be any kind of product rotation or diligence to make sure that I am not sold a faulty or expired product.

Worst primer I have ever used.
Shook can for several minutes before using a stir stick to mix. Took a long time to blend. Brushed on one light coat and waited 24 hours. Applied second coat after light sanding and it has not completely dried after several days in the 70's for highs and 50's for the lows with very low humidity in southern Arizona. Light drips on the outside of the can are still tacky after a week! If you try to heat the paint up it gets more tacky and gooey! Terrible stuff. Super glossy even without a catalyst. If a catalyst is needed for this paint then you need to say so in the store display and on the cans! If you cannot use items even after several days of dry time then this paint is not at all practical. Now I have to strip this garbage off of my axle in order to repaint with real paint. Do not waist your money or time with this soy based product!!!

Will not mix !
I bought this primer because it was recommended to be used with the Majic tractor paint, but was very disappointed when I tried to mix the primer, it was so thick in the bottom of the can that I broke a wooden stiring stick trying to mix it, Then I got a rotary stirring rod that works in a drill and after 15 minutes of working with the drill and stirrer it still was not mixed properly. I did use a small amount even though it was not completely mixed since I had already sanded some areas to bare metal - primer covered well.
