Hyalovet (Hyaluronate Sodium) Injection is a prescription medication used for treating fetlock and carpal joint dysfunction in horses. Veterinarians may recommend Hyalovet in cases caused by chronic or acute non-infectious synovitis resulting from equine osteoarthritis. Hyalovet, which contains hyaluronate sodium, does not require refrigeration and can be administered intra-articularly. FDA approved. How it Works
Hyaluronic acid is a prototype of a variety of mucopolysaccharides and glycosaminoglycans. These consist of repeating D-glucuronic acid and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine disaccharide units linked by beta 1-4 and beta 1-3 glycosidic bonds. Hyaluronic acid is present in the connective tissue of all mammals. It has lubricating and viscoelastic properties to support cartilage integrity and synovial fluid. When used as a therapeutic agent and delivered by injection, it improves the function of the joints and activates repair processes of the tissue within articular cartilage. Hyalovet contains hyaluronate sodium. It is a viscous, colorless, and clear solution with a specific highly pure hyaluronic acid fraction from molecular filtration derived from rooster combs. The exact fraction of hyaluronic acid boasts a high degree of molecular definition (average molecular weight between 500,000 and 730,000).
Special Precautions
- Partially or fully used syringes must be crushed, then discarded in an approved landfill.
- Never administer intravascularly.
- Not for use in humans.
- Not for use in horses intended for food slaughter.

Side Effects
This and any other intra-articular injection can cause a non-severe inflammatory response, including swelling, heat, and tenderness of the joint. This response is typically self-limiting and lasts 2 to 5 days after injection. If the inflammation is severe or excessive, notify your veterinarian.
