The Earthquake 17 in. 99cc Pioneer Dual-Direction Rear-Tine Gas Tiller features a 99cc Viper engine that delivers optimal power to the rear-mounted tines for impressive soil turning capability without sacrificing maneuverability. Dual Direction tines allow the Pioneer to bust through sod in CRT mode, and polish the perfect seed bed in SRT mode. Featuring instant reverse, a simple pull of a handle allows you to back up without shifting gears. No fuss, no cuss, no back and forth easily find the drive mode you want by simply sliding the shift handle into your preferred mode on the locator plate. Dual control handlebars and a compact footprint make maneuvering in tight spaces a breeze and allow for one handed operation. Our super-wide airless tires never go flat and provide incredible traction. The Pioneer Rear Tine Tiller is backed by a 5-year warranty.

For additional information on this product, please see the Product Documents section for all downloadable user manuals, installation guides, brochures and warranty statements.

  • DUAL DIRECTION- Operate in CRT mode (counter rotating tines) to bust sod and till tough soils, then shift to SRT (standard rotating tines) to create a smooth seed bed for planting.
  • FRUSTRATION FREE SHIFTING- Pioneer removes the guesswork from getting in gear with a shift positioning system that other dual direction tillers envy. No fuss, no cuss, no back and forth easily find the drive mode you want by simply sliding the shift handle into your preferred mode on the locator plate.
  • COMPACT POWER- Designed for performance, the Pioneer uses a lighter and quieter 99cc Viper engine that is right-sized for the job reducing the weight and offering a smoother, less noisy and more balanced experience during operation.
  • INSTANT REVERSE- Unlike its competitors, Pioneer takes the shift out of backing up. Seamlessly maneuver backward in your garden with the quick pull of a handle. Release the handle to go forward again.
  • AIRLESS WHEELS- Not only will the super-wide airless wheels never go flat, they have seriously aggressive lugs for clawing at the dirt for maximum traction.
  • DUAL-GRIP HANDLEBARS: Step to the side of your tilling path and employ one-handed operation to avoid those annoying footsteps in your seed-bed.
  • HIGHLY MANEUVERABLE- With its compact frame and balanced weight distribution, the Pioneer allows for fluid navigation in tight growing spaces and stable pivoting capability at the end of garden rows.
  • 5-YEAR WARRANTY-The Earthquake Pioneer is backed by a 5-year warranty and US based service and support.

No Buyers Remorse Here

I recently purchased the Pioneer 31285 tiller to replace an earthquake tiller I bought 30 years ago. It was easy to assemble, started on the first pull and is doing its job at tilling new ground. I'm very happy with my purchase.

Yes, I recommend this product.

This tiller is a beast!

This tiller starts on the first pull and eats through anything you throw at it. Easily maneuvered through the garden. My only complaint is shifting. Sometimes it shifts easy and sometimes it’s rough and can be a knuckle buster. Overall i love it.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Earthquake 31285 ® Pioneer™ Dual Direction Rear Ti

The Earthquake Pioneer is a compact yet powerful rear-tine tiller, great for tight spaces, is easy to handle. the instant reverse simplifies backing up. The tiller was able easily till grass with no problem. easy pull start. The dual-rotating tines make the tiller very versatile.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Awesome, Powerful Tiller!

I love this tiller! The Viper 99 cc engine is plenty of power. I tilled deep into untilled ground using the counter-rotating mode and did not strain the engine. Once broken up, the forward rotating option really breaks up the clods and grass. if you try to use the forward rotating mode in harder ground it will pull you, so use the counter-rotating to break up the hard ground first. I upgraded from another name brand rear-tine tiller that was good, but this one will run circles around it. I did back off of the full throttle stop screw a little to get a few more RPMs after it was broken in good.
