Q: Is the rain defender a chemical that is sprayed on the sweatshirt??

- A: Hi Lizlu, How does Carhartt rain Defender work? Carhartt Rain Defender® sweatshirts and jackets use a durable water repellent (DWR) nylon technology that forces light rain and water to bead up and roll right off. The exterior is made of fiercely durable nylon (which doesn't absorb moisture, but it could maybe seep between the 1000-denier fibers) and it has the “Rain Defender® durable water-repellent finish.” Remember, it's made for working in wet, snowy conditions as opposed to heavy rains.3 years agoHelpful?

Paxton vs. Clarksburg for women who want heavy/warm sweatshirts
6 days ago
I like the sweatshirt, although I didn't need to water repellant feature. The collar, zipper and big pocket are good and the hood will come in handy. It's more snug around the hips than my favorite heavyweight, quarter-zip Clarksburg sweatshirt that's made for women. I wanted another warm sweatshirt, but you only make the Clarksburg and it's only shown in black or gray right now. And the Carhartt store I was in had neither. But the Paxton should be good for working long hours at a desk in a house that we keep at a thrifty 68 degrees in winter, and also be great for yard work and walks in the woods.

Solid Performance, Minor Durability & Color Issues
2 months ago
I really like this sweatshirt overall-it's a solid, heavyweight piece that performs well in tough conditions. The first day I wore it, it was 38 degrees with freezing drizzle, and I used it as an outer layer. It held up well. The rib-knit cuffs and waistband kept the wind out, while the mock-neck collar and hood kept my neck and head warm. It also shed light rain better than expected.
I'm knocking off one star for two reasons. First, the color-I ordered Dark Tranquil Blue Heather, but what I received is noticeably lighter than shown online. Not a bad color, just not as pictured.
Second, a durability concern. The material on the sides is already showing wear from reflective armbands I use regularly, which I didn't expect from a Carhartt product.
Overall, still a warm, well-built sweatshirt, and the mock-neck collar is a great feature.
