Weird cut and sizing

These pants are cut so weird. The waste of the Small is 33". Why even have an elastic waste? The waste size of small pants that fit at the waste should be about 5 " smaller.

Bought a pair yesterday, now I am looking for more in my size!! They fit amazing, but I do love that they are elastic wait/drawstring (which I wear a top over) so they look like a great fitting pair of pants !!! Materials are high quality and lots of pockets. More please!!!
