Of course, using a post-hole digger, a shovel and a hardened steel breaker bar is a time-honored tradition in planting in alluvial or otherwise rocky soil and boy oh boy does south central Tennessee have some rocky soil. There’s SOIL, trees and other things grow well in it on my property, but I’ve begun planting trees lately and bought an auger/PHD for my hobby tractor that came with a 12 inch auger which is great for planting 2-5 gallon potted trees, but I also needed something for much smaller bare root trees and decided on this. The construction is good, it seems those factories in China are following basic plans to the letter. It FITs a 2 inch shaft PHD gearbox and does quick work of putting a 12-18 inch hole in even the rockiest parts of my property which beats the heck out of the traditional methods. Keeps me out of my pain management doc’s office a little longer too. I’m not drilling granite. For the price, function, overall quality, I’m giving it five stars. If it doesn’t last the season I’ll be back to update this.

Works great. I like the corkscrew tip better than a fishtail in hard red mud.
