Grass Seed

With the right seed, the grass can be just as green on your side of the fence.  At Tractor Supply, we have quality grass seed that will help to build the foundation of an envy-worthy lawn. While a manicured and lush lawn is great for curb appeal, there are also many other lawn care benefits to keeping your grass green, such as reduced soil erosion, improved air quality and greater flood control. Learn more about which grass seed could be best for your lawn.

Consider How You’ll Use Your Lawn

To grow grass that is right for your lawn, you must consider factors that impact your lawn’s usage. Is your lawn large in size? Is it a heavy foot traffic area? Are you buying seed to mend patchy grass, or are you aiming to seed the entire space?

For a more resilient grass seed that can tolerate heavy foot traffic, consider purchasing tall fescue or perennial ryegrass. When seeding large spaces or a new lawn, look to purchase grass seed in bulk and consider using a seed spreader. For repairing small patches of dead grass, look to use a fast-growing seed that will introduce new grass seed to your space and fertilizers that will help your grass to germinate at a faster rate.

Choosing Grass by Climate and Sunlight

There are two types of grass—warm-season and cool-season. Where you live will influence what grass seed you plant. Those in northern regions with cold winters and moderate summers should grow cool-season grasses, while warm-season grasses grow best in hot weather, possess drought resistant qualities and are found throughout the south. For regions in-between, a seed mix of the two types of grasses produces the best results.

Not only should you consider climate when buying grass seed, but you should also consider sunlight exposure. Some breeds of grass seed require partial shade, while others need direct sunlight.

Cool-Season Grasses

Cool-season grasses can tolerate both extreme summer heat and cold winter weather. Ideally, they’re planted in late summer or early fall. Popular cool-season types of grass seed include:

  • Kentucky Bluegrass

  • Fescue Blends

  • Perennial Ryegrass

Warm-Season Grasses

Alternately, warm-season grass seed is at its prime in hot weather and is best planted in late spring. Common warm-season grass seed types include:

  • Bahian

  • Bermuda

  • Buffalo

  • Centipede

  • St. Augustine

  • Zoysia
