Yes. Tractor Supply purges cylinders as a service to our customers. The 20lb cylinders that we sell are pre-purged. If the tank states that it needs to be purged or we are unsure that the cylinder has ever held Propane, we purge them before filling.

We do not refill what is known as Autogas, which is used to run the engine that powers the RV. However, we do refill the tanks that are mounted beneath the RV as long as they have a Data Plate that specifies it is used for Propane and the tank passes a visual inspection.

It depends. If lightning is observed within 10 miles of the store we must wait at least 30 minutes before dispensing.

Yes. As a service to our customers we work with our vendors to have old or unusable tanks disposed of properly. Please speak with a Team Member before leaving a tank that needs to be recycled on our premises so that we can place in a safe area.

A typical 20lb grill cylinders holds approximately 4.6 gallons of Propane. The price for us to refill your cylinder will always be a better deal than exchange. The price will vary depending on the local price of Propane. Please check your Tractor Supply for current price per gallon.

Yes. Tractor Supply fills cylinders up to 100lb as long as they are not expired and pass a visual inspection. However, 100lb cylinders may NOT travel in an enclosed vehicle. If a 100lb cylinder is brought in an enclosed vehicle we are not able to fill it. 100lb cylinders must also always travel in an upright position because of the location of the relief valve.

A Propane cylinder must be requalified at 12 years after the original date of manufacture. Once a Propane cylinder is requalified, if the requalification letter is an “E” then it does not expire until 5 years after the date that it was stamped. If the requalification letter is an “S” then it does not expire until 10 years after the date that it was stamped.

No. Requalifying requires additional licensing that we do not have. You will need to contact a Propane Wholesaler like Amerigas or Suburban Propane.

The Department of Transportation regulates how much Propane can be transported in a vehicle. For Close Bodied Vehicles, the limit is 90 total pounds of Propane, with no single cylinder holding more than 45 pounds. As a reminder, a grill cylinder is typically called a “20lb cylinder” because it holds 20 lbs of Propane. After the cylinder is filled though, it will weigh approximately 37 lbs. For Open Bodied Vehicles, the limit is 1,000 lbs gross aggregate weight. Gross aggregate weight is the weight of the cylinder in total after it is filled with Propane. 

Yes. A Propane cylinder must always be removed from the vehicle or trailer in order to be properly grounded. Further, all cylinders must be filled on an industrial scale to prevent overfilling. We understand that this is sometimes an inconvenience, however we value the safety of our customers and Team Members and will always require that the cylinder is filled on the scale.

Yes. If your local Tractor Supply has a dispenser on site we fill your tank while you wait. If you download our App you can even let us know when you arrive for faster service.

No. Filled cylinders are not allowed to remain on site unless they are kept in a cage. Tractor Supply does not have the equipment to store tanks for extended periods of time.

Tractor Supply will dispense propane as long as the equipment allows us to. We do not typically have issues until the temperatures reach the negatives. When temperatures are at the extremes we would advise calling the store prior to arrival to ensure the equipment is working properly.

Yes. Tractor Supply fills on a scale and the gallons are metered. We can typically dispense to within a few tenths of how much you would like your cylinder filled.
