ESP Safety Shelters (above-ground only) offer the ultimate in multi-purpose protection and security for you and loved ones against violent acts of nature and multiple threats posed by man. This shelter will withstand the most extreme tornado activity and offer a safe zone against home invasion. It is preferable for the shelter to be installed within the interior of a residence. If you choose to install it outdoors, it must be within 150 feet of the residence it is intended to serve and must be protected from all external weather conditions. THIS SHELTER IS NOT WATERPROOF. The shelter has undergone and passed testing at the National Wind Institute at Texas Tech University. It has been tested and withstood a total of nine impacts from 15 lb. 2x4s traveling at 100 mph. These impacts are equivalent to the force produced by an F5 tornado with 250mph winds. All ESP Safety Shelters have been verified by the National Storm Shelter Association (NSSA) to be in compliance with FEMA 320, FEMA 361 and the ICC-500-2014 Code requirements when installed per the manufacturer's guidelines and inspected by a qualified inspector. Installation checklists and inspection checklists are provided. All shelters have been designed by Registered Structural Engineers and have undergone a rigorous 3rd party review process. Near Absolute Protection definition from FEMA P-361: Level of protection afforded to the occupants of a safe room built according to the guidance in the most current edition of FEMA P-361. Our current knowledge of tornadoes and hurricanes indicates that safe room occupants will have a very high probability of being protected from injury or death. These shelters are designed to be a DIY project, but once the shelter installation is completed, it must be inspected by a qualified inspector. Contact your local building inspector or find an engineer or architect in your area. Visit www.nssa.cc to find a pre-approved list of installation companies. The NSSA type 4 seal will provide a warranty after the installation check list and final inspection checklist are complete and sent to the manufacturer. The NSSA type 4 seal and a Certificate of Installation will be sent to customers after the manufacturer has received the installation checklist and final inspection checklist. The Limited Lifetime Storm Damage Replacement Benefit does require that all installation procedures be followed and documented proof must be submitted to the manufacturer.

Had a storm hit very close to home. Decided to get a shelter large enough for the family and a dog. Ended up finding this 9 person shelter and decided to give it a try. It is better than I was expecting! This has to be one of the best engineered buildings I have ever seen. I didn't have to pry to "stretch" holes or anything. Everything went together very smoothly and lined up great.
I did do a couple of things a little different than the instructions state. To start, I installed all the anchor bolts in the floor after drilling the holes. I don't understand waiting until it's finished assembling. The anchor bolts help to hold the heavy pieces in place at the floor while assembling.
The next was the door track. I assembled the track and placed on the door before trying to move the door into place. This door is heavy!! I couldn't see being able to lift the door into place with the extended support bolts on the trolly rollers. The door frame is kind of deep and lifting it into place on an angle while trying to slide the holes over long bolt threads didn't seem like the best way.
Anyway, after getting everything assembled, this thing is great. I will say it has quite an echo and reverb sound inside. There is a warning decal to wear earplugs. I can see why! I will probably insulate the walls or spray some sound deadener on it to cut the reverb down. Also, I added some angle iron brackets so that I could place a shelf along the top portion and some pegboard for little baskets to hold stuff. I have added battery powered lights and will soon add a small tv so I can keep up with the weather.
I am pleased with my purchase!

Class act project

I work in a aerospace CNC machine shop where we have tight tolerances and have to fit together accordingly. This project went together flawlessly and I understand what they did and why it is built this way. I am very impressed with it! I have giving many "tours" through it and my friends and family were impressed also. This is a class act shelter.

Easy to assemble, fast delivery. extremely heavy duty and almost impossible to become trapped inside My best like is that the door slides to the side and does not swing in or out.. My wife's sister was killed in a tornado so every time we have a watch she is terrified. Installing the safety shelter has relieved her fear. She walks into the garage, sits inside and closes the door.
