Rudd Rangers are versatile birds that can be raised in more confined areas or in free-range environments but prefer the latter. Just like our wonderful Rudd residents, these birds are docile and get along with most other breeds. They have red plumage with dark tail and wing feathers. When dressed, the Rudd Ranger's body is more proportional compared to a broiler, making the dark meat almost equal the breast meat. Finishing out between 12-14 weeks old, these chickens are slower growing than the Cornish but don't require the strict feeding program that Cornish Cross are known for. Q&As

1 - 6 of 6 Questions

Q: Are these birds ok for hatching eggs?  Or too heavy to breed

1 Answer
  • Tony
A: Hi Glory hillis, Rudd Rangers will lay eggs, but not productively and they could hatch eggs, but are not known to be broody. They are strictly bred as a meat bird that produces a more equal proportion of dark to white meat. I hope this helps!

  • Tony
A: Hi 42753! Our Rudd Ranger chickens are really not layers and are meant for meat to fill your freezer and feed your family. The however may lay a small amount of eggs but not until they reach 24 weeks or there abouts. Thanks for your question!

Very unhappy!

We ordered 20 chicks and only 8 survived. The box they came in was too small, they were on top of each other. They sent replacements but they ALL died the day they arrived. We will never order from this hatchery from Iowa again. Buyer beware!!

If I could give it a 0 I would!

I have never had problems with chicks dying in all my 20 years of having chickens. This year has by far been the worst! On day 1 Friday the 13th, one arrived dead in the box. By the time I got home and got them out of the box I noticed 3 more sickly and one more with a deformed beak and missing an eye. By Sat night 3 more died. Now I’m down 4 out of 10 and it’s past the 24 hour window. It’s how Monday and I’ve lost another so I’m down 5 total. I have 10cornish cross that are doing fine. However, the rangers all seemed to be sickly upon arrival. Yes, I gave them electrolytes, heat, and proper bedding. This is literally my first batch of chicks to die on me like this and it’s heartbreaking!
