Q&As

1 - 2 of 2 Questions

Q: How can I test for the ground wire?

1 Answer
  • A: Howdy neighbor! To test the ground wire on your Hopkins 7-way socket, look for the terminal labeled "GD" located at the 5 o'clock position on the plug face. You can easily verify it by connecting a 12V test light to a positive power source and touching the probe to the ground pin to see if it lights up. Alternatively, use a multimeter in continuity mode to confirm there is a direct, beep-verified connection between that pin and a clean patch of metal on your vehicle's frame.

Follow the wiring diagram for your trailer

The socket is economy priced and I did not expect it to be as good as it is. It works like it should and should last quite a while. The only 2 reasons for a 4 star rating are the very thin hold down clamps for the wires and the location labeling for the attachments. The clamps bend easily when the screws are tightened leaving them loose. I soldered the ends of mine and re-installed them with good results. At the base of the screws is the legend that is designed to help you with locating the wires on the proper terminals. A few were not in the right location and the raised lettering was very difficult to read. I used my trailer with the standard wire pattern to correct the plug and it works fine.
