I used these screws when building a ramp for my dog to get into my back yard from my back porch. They went into the wood without splitting it and held the planks securely.

Hillman 8x3 all purpose wood screws

Unless a nice size pilot hole is drilled to same depth as this screw, in my experience, these screws will not penetrate well and quite a bit of force is needed which resulted, on my project, with stripped heads and insufficient depth finish/failure to obtain screw head to wood surface plane.
So, I ended up using nails and a hammer instead.
No, I do not recommend this product.
