Doxycycline Monohydrate Tablet is an antibiotic effective against Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, chlamydia, ehrlichiosis and Lyme disease. It's a medication that can be given to both cats and dogs and comes in a tablet form. How it Works
Doxycycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic from the tetracycline class. It treats many types of bacterial infections by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It has bacteriostatic activity against many gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
Special Precautions
- Do not administer doxycycline after its expiration date. After expiration, this medication can result in a serious, kidney-damaging syndrome. Discard unused doxycycline after expiration or if it is no longer required.
- Doxycycline can cause your pet's skin to become more sensitive to sunlight, resulting in a sunburn.
- Do not administer any laxatives, antacids, calcium supplements, or multivitamins within two hours before or after doxycycline administration.
- Do not administer to nursing animals. This drug can result in teeth discoloration and slow bone growth.
- Do not administer to pregnant animals. It may harm offspring.
Immediately contact your closest emergency animal hospital or vet.
Side Effects
The most frequently-reported side effect of doxycycline are diarrhea and nausea. If the pet develops facial hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the tongue or lips, or other allergic reaction symptoms, discontinue use immediately and promptly seek veterinary attention. Some dogs may also experience jaundice, mental confusion, lesions, hair loss, or appetite loss.

Doxycycline Monohydrate
Follow as directed by your veterinarian. As a general guideline, dogs should be given 2mg to 5mg of the drug, per pound of body weight every 12 hours or 24 hours. The dosage and duration of treatment depend upon the type of infection your dog is suffering from. Although it isn't necessary to give this medication with food you must make sure that the dog consumes plenty of water while he's being treated with this drug. Also avoid giving your pet any foods that contain dairy products as this will reduce the absorption of the medication by the body. If your dog has been prescribed doxycyline in the past and you still have a few tablets left, make sure you take a look at the expiration date that's mentioned on the package as expired doxycycline can damage your dog's kidneys and cause death.
