Dicloxacillin stops bacterial growth. It inhibits protein synthesis and alters the cytoplasmic membrane permeability of susceptible organisms, fighting off microbial and bacterial infections.

Special Precautions

• Skipping a dose or failing to complete the entire course of therapy can decrease the effectiveness of the treatment, increasing the likelihood that the bacteria will become resistant and will no longer be susceptible to dicloxacillin sodium capsule treatment or any other antibacterial medications.
• Closely follow directions when administering this medication to treat a bacterial infection.
• This drug is only for the treatment of bacterial infection. It is not an effective treatment for viral infections, including the common cold.
• Keep out of reach of animals and children.

Side Effects

Side effects from penicillin use are typically not severe and have a somewhat low risk of recurrence. Hypersensitivity-related reactions (unrelated to dosage) may occur and can present as:

• Full-blown anaphylaxis
• Anemias
• Seizures
• Fever
• Rashes

Oral penicillin can cause gastrointestinal effects, such as:

• Diarrhea
• Vomiting
• Anorexia

Penicillins can alter the flora of the gut, causing diarrhea and allowing for superinfection of the colon.

Tips

Doxycycline has a high bioavailability, meaning it is easily absorbed by the canine body. It can be given with or without food, as long as the dog has constant access to fresh water.
