Bought both, returned Carhartt!
MI resident and I’ve been a Carhartt guy for years and actually work in my gear, so I was surprised by how much I liked this Berne jacket. My daughter needed a new coat, and I wanted to get her a set of bibs too so she could match me when we’re out in the weather. Carhartt doesn’t make many girl‑colored bibs beyond toddler sizes, so I tried the Berne bibs in Plum—and since I wasn’t familiar with Berne, I ordered both the Berne and Carhartt jackets to compare quality, warmth, and color.
I have to admit, Berne impressed me. My daughter tried both jackets on, and even though I expected her to pick Carhartt, she chose Berne immediately. Both jackets have tough canvas shells, sherpa lining, and solid stitching, but the Berne feels slightly heavier and the sherpa is noticeably softer and fuzzier—probably the deciding factor for her.
The pockets were another difference. Berne’s pockets are deeper and more practical, while the Carhartt pockets are extremely shallow and lined half‑nylon, half‑sherpa, which didn’t make much sense for kids with wet or dirty hands.
As for color, the two “plum” shades don’t match perfectly—Carhartt is a bit lighter—but they’re close enough unless you’re doing coordinated photos.
Overall, both jackets are good, but Berne surprised me in the best way. For my daughter, it ended up being the better choice for the cold, wet MI winters.
