Acetazolamide Tablets are used in the treatment of hyperkalemic periodic paralysis (HYPP), which is a genetic disease affecting the neuromuscular system. It is also useful in treating glaucoma. Acetazolamide is a commonly-used diuretic for horses. Available in a single tablet to be administered orally.How it Works
Acetazolamide rids the body of excess fluid and some minerals, such as potassium.
Special Precautions
Acetazolamide should not be used in pets with any of the following conditions:
- Obstructive lung disease
- Abnormal chloride levels
- Abnormal potassium levels
- Abnormal sodium levels
- Other abnormal electrolyte levels
- Severe adrenal disease
- Severe kidney disease
- Severe liver disease
Use cautiously in pets with pre-existing blood abnormalities or significant respiratory acidosis.

Immediately contact your closest emergency animal hospital or vet.

Potential adverse reactions include:
- Tiredness
- Stomach upset
- Loss of appetite
- Drowsiness
- Dry mouth
- Blurry vision
- Increased urine volume
- Dizziness

Tips
- While your pet is taking this medication, your veterinarian will likely monitor your pet's blood cell and electrolyte counts. They might take a baseline complete blood count prior to starting this medication.
- If used for glaucoma, your pet's eye pressures should be monitored.
- If used for alkalosis, your pet's blood gases should be monitored.
