History of Black Sex Link Chickens

Black Sex Link chickens are a hybrid breed created from two purebred breeds: the Rhode Island Red and the Barred Rock, both well-regarded, famous breeds with long histories in the United States. Sex link refers to the ability for their sex to be distinguished at birth by their down color. Black Sex Link hens are distinguished by the pure black down of their chicks. Male Black Sex Links are born with a patch of white on their heads. The easy distinction of their sex makes them an attractive bird for both hatcheries and backyard coops across the country.

As a product of the Rhode Island Red and Barred Rock breeds, Black Sex Links inherit characteristics from both parents. The Rhode Island Red, which grants the Black Sex Links their deep red and mahogany colors, is a popular breed that is still the state bird of Rhode Island. Multiple strains of the Rhode Island Red exist today, with the heritage dual-purpose bird dating back to the 1800s, being well regarded for its fine-flavored meat and egg-laying. The more modern, industrial variant of the Rhode Island Red is far more focused on egg production.

This is a trait they share with the Barred Rock, the other part of the creation of the Black Sex Link chickens. The Barred Rock breed has a similar history to the 1800s. They are treasured for their beautiful, barred plumage, reliability, and docile nature.

Temperament and Good-to-Knows

Though they may look dark and imposing, Black Sex Link hens are known for their friendly and active demeanor. They may have more energy than other breeds, and they are sometimes described as skittish by their owners. They are regarded as a low-broodiness breed.

Occasionally, the roosters can inherit a bit of aggressiveness from their Rhode Island Red parents, so be careful when introducing children or other animals to your Black Sex Links. If socialized well from an early age, this rare issue can be avoided.

Adaptability

Sex Link chickens are often described as confident and adaptable. They handle confinement and free-ranging equally well, and they tend to be less stressed by changes in routine than other high-strung breeds.

Egg and Meat Production

Black Sex Links are considered dual-purpose birds. They inherit the strong egg-laying capabilities and fine meat of their parent breeds. On average, hens lay around 250 brown eggs a year, which is a very strong number. Egg production even stays steady during winter when other breeds may see a decrease.

Expert tip: All variations of Sex Link chickens usually integrate well into mixed flocks, though a clear pecking order will still form. If you’re keeping Black Sex Links with more timid breeds, make sure you provide multiple feeding and watering stations to ensure everyone has access without stress.

Visual Characteristics

Black Sex Link chickens have a unique appearance that results from their Rhode Island Red and Barred Rock parents. The deep red coloration and sturdy build of the Rhode Island Red blend perfectly with the feathers of the Barred Rock, creating a chicken with black, regal plumage.

Red and Golden Sex Link chickens are known for their striking contrasts and rich coloration, allowing them to stand out in any flock. While their base coloring typically includes black feathers, Red and Golden variations display warm copper, mahogany or honey-toned highlights across the neck, chest and sometimes the wings. These colors often deepen with age, giving mature birds a bold appearance.

Hens usually show more pronounced red or golden coloring, especially towards their heads. Their tail feathers and wings occasionally include traces of turquoise. Roosters more resemble their Barred Rock heritage, with darker bodies transitioning to barred black and white feathers up top. This visual difference is part of what allows Black Sex Links to be sexed at hatch and easily identified as they grow.

In addition to their coloring, these birds have a staunch build that contributes to their imposing stature. Roosters often reach 8-9 pounds as opposed to hens at 6-7 pounds.

Expert tip: To keep their feather colors vibrant, limit prolonged sun exposure during extreme heat, as prolonged exposure can cause feather fading over time.

Health and Care

Black Sex Link chickens, as well as Red and Golden variations, are valued for their strong overall health and low-maintenance care requirements. Taking traits from both of their historic ancestors, Sex Link chickens offer the best of both worlds. As hybrid birds, they benefit from hybrid vigor, which often results in better disease resistance, faster growth and improved adaptability compared to some pure breeds. With proper health and wellness practices, these chickens are resilient and can thrive in a variety of settings.

Housing and Space Requirements

Routine care includes providing a clean, dry coop with plenty of ventilation and space to prevent respiratory concerns and reduce stress. Generally, you will want to provide your flock with at least 4 sq. ft. per bird inside the coop and 8-10 sq. ft. per bird in an outdoor run. Perches should be sturdy and wide enough to support the medium-to-large size builds of Black Sex Links, and nesting boxes should be easily accessible to accommodate their frequent laying.

Nutrition and Feeding

Poultry feed is crucial to any chicken’s overall health. A high-quality layer feed is key to maintaining the productivity of Sex Link chickens. Fresh water must always be available, and occasional treats or kitchen scraps can be offered in moderation.

Common Health Considerations

Black, Red and Golden Sex Links are healthy, hardy birds that have little in the way of genetic health problems. However, as heavy producers, they may experience extra strain on their bodies over time. Egg-laying fatigue, reproductive issues and calcium depletion can occur, especially in older hens. Regular supplementation is essential to support strong eggshells and long-term health.

Parasite Management and Skin Health

Similar to all chickens, Sex links are susceptible to parasites. Poultry fly and pest control products can help prevent their spread, and poultry dewormers treat internal parasites. Periodic health checks help prevent infestations, as well as help you identify any other health concerns before they become larger problems. Also, dust-bathing areas, whether natural or provided, are especially important for maintaining feather and skin health.

Expert tip: Because Sex Link chickens are heavy layers, consider transitioning older hens to a lower-protein maintenance feed once you notice egg production beginning to slow. Making the switch helps reduce long-term stress on their bodies.
