    Gardener gift ideas

    Authored by Leah Chester-Davis

Most any season, a gardener can find something garden-related that captures their interest. Even in cold weather when the garden has been put to bed, most gardeners love to peruse the latest garden catalogs and dream of the next growing season. During this season of gift-giving we share these gift ideas for the gardeners in your life.

    Garden art

Garden art. Art is quite subjective, but there are a few items that will be appreciated by most anyone. Wind chimes add both a visual element and charming sound to the garden. A whimsical birdhouse may be a perfect gift to tuck into a garden corner for both feathered friends and the gardener to enjoy. A garden sculpture the recipient may have pointed out is a sure-fire bet.

    Compost or mulch

Good, quality compost or mulch. Spend a little time around a group of Master Gardeners and it is not long before they reveal the best gift ever is a load of good quality compost delivered to their home in the spring or fall. After all, a beautiful garden starts with healthy soil. Just think of your favorite gardeners nestled in their beds, while visions of a beautiful garden dance in their heads.

    Gardening supplies

Tools for the job. Lots of options here and it helps to know the type gardening your gift recipient enjoys and what they might need. An oft-cited favorite of many gardeners is Felco #2 pruners. They are easy for the gardener to slip into a back pocket anytime they are out and about in the garden. A lightweight but heavy duty, dumpable garden cart makes hauling garden soil, containers, and debris a breeze. If the gardener is just getting started in building a collection of tools, check out our guide to essential gardening tools for more ideas. Otherwise, ask if there are certain tools the gardener would like to add to the tool shed.

    Raised planter or planters

Gardening is for everyone. For a gardener with mobility issues, a raised planter can be a welcomed gift. A raised bed at a height where the gardener can sit and reach into it, or one on legs where a wheelchair can be pulled alongside is a thoughtful gift that is also therapeutic for someone who finds enjoyment in nature.

    Kid-sized gardening tools

Start ‘em young. Gardening offers lifelong benefits. If you have children, consider pint-sized gardening tools such as a rake, shovel, and hoe to encourage them to get outside and dig in the dirt. Better yet, give them their own raised bed or small garden plot to grow whatever they wish. Pair that with children’s books about gardening.

If your favorite gardener raises their own fruits and vegetables and loves to preserve the goodness, gift them a set of beautiful canning jars or special bottles for homemade vinegars. Or a gift certificate to a nursery that specializes in fruit and nut trees.

    Pretty paper, pretty ribbons

When you wrap those presents to your darling from you, add a little flair. A gift card could be tucked into a pair of gardening gloves or a garden basket could be filled with gloves and hand pruners. A collapsible basket used for yard debris could be filled with larger tools. Whatever you give, deck the halls with good cheer and love.
