Tarter Farm and Ranch was founded in 1945 as the Tarter Gate Company in Dunnville, Kentucky, starting with hand-built wooden gates made on the farm. Early production was practical and repetitive by design, with a small weekly output sold locally as the work proved itself. Over time, the company expanded into steel gates and broader farm and ranch equipment as needs grew past a single gate line. In 2008, the name shifted to reflect that wider scope as Tarter Farm and Ranch Equipment.
