Percorten-V ( desoxycorticosterone pivalate) injection, is used to treat hormonal deficiencies in dogs (primary adrenocortical insufficiency), and is a substitute therapy for the mineralocorticoid deficit. Percorten-V is an FDA approved product used in the treatment of canine Addison s Disease. Percorten-V for dogs is prescription only and is sold in 4 mL vials. FDA approved. How it Works
Percorten (desoxycorticosterone pivalate) works by promoting the resorption of sodium that leads to the dangerous transfer of potassium from extracellular fluid into the renal tubes, thus supporting potassium excretion essential to preventing primary adrenocortical insufficiency. (e.g., Addison's disease)
Special Precautions
Do not use Percorten in dogs that have previously had a hypersensitivity reaction to desoxycorticosterone pivalate.
CAUTIONS: Any dog presenting with severe hypovolemia, dehydration, pre-renal azotemia and inadequate tissue perfusion ("Addisonian crisis") must be rehydrated with intravenous fluid (saline) therapy before starting treatment with Percorten. Avoid inadvertent intravenous injection which may have an adverse effect on the dog. The effectiveness of Percorten may be reduced if potassium-sparing diuretics, such as spironolactone, are administered concurrently. Use Percorten with caution in dogs with congestive heart disease, edema, severe renal disease or primary hepatic failure. Desoxycorticosterone pivalate may cause polyuria, polydipsia, increased blood volume, edema and cardiac enlargement. Excessive weight gain may indicate fluid retention secondary to sodium retention. The safety of desoxycorticosterone pivalate has not been established in breeding, pregnant and lactating dogs and dogs less than 6 months of age.
Overdose Information
Immediately contact your closest emergency animal hospital or vet.
