    Chocolate Sauce Topping for Ice Cream

    When Elaine got this chocolate sauce recipe from her cousin more than 20 years ago, she added an ingredient of her own: "Sometimes when I make it, I put peanut butter in," she says.


    • 1 cup water
    • ¼ cup butter or margarine
    • 1 cup sugar
    • ½ cup Hershey cocoa
    • Pinch of salt
    •  tsp. vanilla extract
    • 3 Tbsp. flour
    • ½ cup water
    • ¼ cup peanut butter (optional)


    Heat 1 cup water with butter or margarine in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Combine sugar, Hershey cocoa and add mixture to boiling water. Add salt, vanilla. Combine flour and 1/2 cup water in a container with a lid, and shake to mix; add slowly to saucepan to thicken the sauce. Add peanut butter (optional). Cook until thick. Store in refrigerator.
