Choosing a Trimmer

Keep your yard looking it's best with a quality string trimmer to cut around trees, fence posts and other landscaped areas. Be sure to select one that is comfortable to both carry and use.

String Trimmer Engines: 2-Cycle or 4-Cycle

There are two general options for trimmer engines: 2-Cycle and 4-Cycle.

The 2-cycle engine requires a mixture of gasoline and oil. You have to mix the appropriate ratio and keep it in a its own designated fuel container.

The 4-cycle engine runs just on gasoline like any typical lawn mower. This engine is more powerful at lower speeds and is more eco-friendly with fewer emissions.

String Trimmer Shafts: Curved or Straight

String trimmers come in two styles - straight or curved shaft (the part that connects the engine to the trimming head).

For most typical yards, curved shaft trimmers are a great choice for homeowners. Curved shaft trimmers are the lightest weight option and easy to use and adjust (so you don't scalp your lawn), and affordable.

Professional landscapers prefer straight shaft trimmers, as they provide access to hard to reach areas like underneath bushes and decks. You can also purchase a variety of attachments made for specific jobs like edging and hedge trimming. Straight shaft trimmers are more comfortable for longer trimming projects since they produce less vibration, but are heavier and more expensive than curved-shaft trimmers.

String Trimmer Comfort Level

As you shop for your new string trimmer, be sure to hold and walk with it as you would while trimming. Ask yourself if it feels balanced and if you can handle its weight. Most string trimmers come with a shoulder strap to help relieve pressure on your arms when carrying the trimmer. Gas-powered string trimmers usually weigh 10 to 15 pounds, with the curved shaft being lighter than the straight-shaft trimmers.

String Trimmer Features

Here are some features available on different models of string trimmers:

  • Automatic string-advance - continuous feed of the cutting string as needed (the string basically wears away little by little as you trim).
  • Bump-feed string - tap the head the trimmer on the ground to advance the string.
  • Easy-to-load, individual nylon strings - insert directly into trimmer head.
