Q: Are blades self sharpening?

- A: No, they are not. Here are the sharpening instructions from the manual. Sharpening the Cutting Blades: 1. Spread a thin layer of lapping compound on the front edge of the reel blades. 2. Adjust the cutter bar so that the blade has light but firm contact across the full width of the cutter bar. CAUTION: Do not over-tighten the adjusting screws, as this could damage the cutter bar. Tighten both screws during final adjustment. 3. Turn the reel blades until the front edge of the cutter bar blade is polished. WARNING: Clean any grinding compound or debris from the cutter bar blade, reel blade, pinions and pawls. NOTE: Use industrial or valve lapping compound between 100 and 240 grit. Lubricate the axle and pinion with a light film of wheel bearing grease.7 years agoHelpful?

This thing cuts great on level ground. I even like the sound it makes while making clean crisp clippings. My lawn however is lumpy. Whenever a tire dipped about an inch the cutting blade would get stuck on a tuft of grass. That was with the highest setting, too. I remember having one of these as a kid and you could wind up the blades by moving it back and forth a couple times. Then it could get through a tough spot. This one is just too light. Anyway, it would get stuck too often for me. It would be great on a smooth lawn

First Time In My Adult Life Using A Reel Mower

I've only had it about a week and I've cut the yard twice. My yard was in need of cutting so I set the cutting height to mow at the highest cutting height. A few days later I lowered the cutting height and cut the yard a second time.
The mower cuts well with not much more effort needed to push a regular walk behind gasoline mower.
I've been very sedentary for the last 6 years from dealing with grief from my wife passing away and find that I get winded easily while mowing the yard and need to stop every 15 to 20 minutes to recover. I'm fairly sure that as I regain my stamina while using the mower over this summer that I will be able to mow the yard in a much shorter time after my body becomes use to the exertion and regains the stamina needed to cut the yard.
I will probably cut the front yard one day and the back yard the next day.
Overall, for the very short time I've had the mower, it mows well and gives the yard the same appearance that would be achieved with a gasoline mower.
I will be 73 years old on July 31, 2024
