It's caused by naturally occurring bacteria that that become more plentiful when the soil stays too wet inside the bag. Once it's put down the odor, if there is any, should dissipate on its own within 24-48 hours.

In California, Texas, and Idaho this is formulated with humus, processed manure and poultry litter. Any growing media product that contains compost or forest products has the possibility that it contains peanut or tree nut shells, nuts, wood bark, etc. therefore we cannot guarantee them to be peanut or tree nut free. Growing media that does not contain compost or forest products are mixed and bagged at the same facilities as those that do.
