It's caused by naturally occurring bacteria that that become more plentiful when the soil stays too wet inside the bag. However, his can be used in a raised bed only when mixed with potting soil. Maintain a blend of 50% potting soil and 50% garden soil/topsoil/planting soil. - A: Scotts Humus and Manure is made from humus (from one or more of the following: peat, processed forest products, rice hulls, and/or compost), processed manure and poultry litter. In California, Texas, and Idaho this is formulated with humus, processed manure and poultry litter. Any growing media product that contains compost or forest products has the possibility that it contains peanut or tree nut shells, nuts, wood bark, etc. therefore we cannot guarantee them to be peanut or tree nut free. i bought 160 bags of this to put in my raised beds,i am vey dissapointed with this product it is full of plastic ,cigarette butts some metal pieces among other things i cannot inditify. i thought scotts would have better quality control than this.i would like a rep from scotts to come look at this maybe they can prevent this from becoming a larger problem in the future. waiting for a reply which i do not think will happen

CLAY and Mulch. Manure? Well it must be the best smelling around this is garbage soil. Sticks, Mulch pieces, and again CLAY thick and not great for watering. If you need to FILL HOLES in yard, great, if you want plants to grow, find better.

I have raised beds all over my property, every year the soil level falls and nutrients are depleated. This product helps rise the soil level and increases the organic materials that replenish the productivity of the gardens. IMO the very best bang for the buck, a very inexpensive way to get the job done!

EDITED REVIEW: This review isn’t inclusive to the product-BIG FAN!! 5 stars!! It’s in regards to the service. I ordered this as part of a larger order and for delivery. Everything else arrived earlier, this product did not. I was NOT informed or notified otherwise that they would be delivered separately. I assume, maybe, that’s primarily on part of the delivery partner (because it was delivered by Roadie and not Tractor Supply) that the initial acceptance of the order was partially refused and, secondly, at fault of Tractor Supply-for not contacting me of the changes. I amend my 1 star view to 3 stars. My rating isn’t against the product, but the organizations that handled it-I should also mention that I was delivered old product with busted bags that are disintegrating and was still charged full cost.

FULL OF PLASTIC

Added to my garden and it’s chuck full of plastic. Pulling out dime size thick and hard plastic pieces for weeks along with what appears to be shredded plastic bags and pieces of plastic tarp. I don’t even want to eat the vegetables I’m growing in it now because I’m not trying to feed my family microplastics.

Bought this product every year, enjoyed quality of product. But this year was very surprised when open bags. It was pure manure in those bags….. hopefully it is just bad bulk and next time I will get product that is listed on the bag….

I ordered this online and when I arrived I was given a flatbed cart with 10 bags on it that I loaded into my truck. The bags of manure were busted and I was disappointed by the experience.

Don't put this on your yard for top dressing

This product may work in a garden but don't put it on your lawn. Very disappointing how many sticks and other debris was in this supposed compost. Be advised that being in a plastic bag that this product gets soaking wet and difficult to spread around unless you first dump it on the ground and let the sun dry it out. I would never put this stuff on my yard again. I found large bags of sphagnum moss at menards that works perfectly for top dressing grass seed. Sphagnum moss spreads easily with a compost spreader like Vevor and provides perfect top dressing to keep grass seed moist because it holds water well.

Dark, rich soil that my plants love

I put down a layer of the hummus manure mixture on top of the mostly sandy soil in our flower bed as recommended by Scott’s. It’s only been a month but my flowers seem to be enjoying its nourishment. The mixture in the bag was slightly moist and had a nice earthy smell.

I spread it over a threadbare patch of our lawn. I raked it out so each bag covered an area about six feet by six feet, about one-fourth of an inch deep, and I've watered it every day since then. That was about a week ago. The area already looks much better.
