Great if You're Realistic about Limitations
a year ago
Ok, I've read alot of reviews and feel some of them are very far from true. I live completely off-grid in central Oklahoma and bought this for my 200sqft cabin.
Here's what I have running constantly:
1.) 4.4 cu-ft Hisense mini fridge 90W - The mini fridge doesn't run constantly. It cycles on and off and the actuall energy pull ranges between 96-131W when it is cycled on.
2.) Floor lamp with a LED light bulb - Actual pull is so small it doesn't register on the display screen.
3.) Mr. Heater Fan Blower for a liquid propane heater 35W - Just like the floor lamp, actual pull is so small it doesn't register on display screen.
4.) TDRForce Bottled Water Dispenser - I have this drawing water from two 5gal Primo water jugs and pumping into a faucet set up to a slop sink. The actual pull is again, too small to register on the display screen and only uses power when the faucet is open and water is flowing out.
5.) 1-2 USB cords to charge cell phones and the shower pump - Actual pull is to small to register.
This solar kit is perfect to run these 5 items on a daily without interruption regardless of weather and/or sunlight. However, I still need to cook and that's where we run into problems. I have a very small electric hotpot with two settings. The low setting is 300W and high is 600W. I only use the low setting and this is enough to cook just about anything you would make on the stove top. The capacity is very small, so it only works if cooking for 1-2 people, and I typically need it on for about 20mins per meal. I also have a 2.5 cup electric kettle that pulls 700W and boils water in about 3-5mins depending on the starting temperature of the water when poured into the kettle. On a sunny day, I can use the hotpot and kettle for all three meals with the other 5 items still running like normal. On a cloudy or foggy day, one round of kettle and hotpot kills it. If I just use the hotpot and kettle without the other 5 things going the generator will drop to 2 (out of 5) green lights. When you have 2 green lights, it's really best to turn the whole thing off until the sun comes back up in the morning.
For those of you just starting out, I think it's worth knowing that there are some pretty basic functions this kit will not work for. When we were building our cabin, we tried running a table saw and a chopsaw and didn'tuse it for anything else. It worked well on a sunny day just fine ending the day with 2 lights. When we ran these two power tools and ran a 1800W kettle (1.7L capacity) ONE TIME, we ran out of power and had to wait a day for it to recharge. After that, we bought a gas generator to run the power tools and a 700W kettle with a 2.5 cup capacity.
Afyer the cabin was built, but before it was insulated, we ran a 1000W radiant heater on a 23 degree night. Fully charged, it lasted 3.5 hours and then went dead. After that, we bought propane tanks and a propane heater and now we just run the fan blower on the solar.
We do have an electric griddle, but we use it with the gas generator because it pulls 1500W and will drain one light on the solar after making breakfast for 2 adults and one 12yr old child.
At the end of that day, it does work and I'm glad I have it. Do recommend reading up on everything you want to plug into this generator before trying it, so you know how many watts your item is going to pull. There are many electrical devices that do not disclose wattage, but all of them will disclose volts and amps. When you encounter this, just multiple the volts by amps and this will give you the wattage. I also recommend investing in a gas generator to supplement your solar kit as well as heating with propane when possible. At some point, I will need to buy another kit like this one to be able to cook meals without going outside to turn on the gas generator or using the solar and worrying about not having enough power for the fridge. I don't mind making all of the adjustments, but it would have been VERY helpful to know the reality of the limits before purchasing.
Yes, I recommend this product.

Totaly happy with natures gen elite, and will be expanding with more power pods. The only draw back, is not being able to install an " EMP shield" device to the system.
