      Surface accuracy and machine vibration.

      Have owned this machine about a year now with disappointing results. Used as-is, I was getting a wavy sanded surface, with waves from .020" to .030" deep. Simply unacceptable results. The technical guy at Grizzly was totally useless, he kept telling me "He was sorry I felt that way".........USELESS. !!! The drum runs true and smoothly; the sandpaper is good quality and long lasting. I decided to retrofit the machine, if I could. I disconnected the conveyor feed motor and clamped in a smooth melamine table to feed the material by hand, these were the results I was looking for. When I fed material by hand, without the conveyer feed belt I got a smooth surface finish that was now .001" to .002" accurate. The next problem was the height adjustment. There is no way to lock the table height. I could watch the hand crank move because of vibration; it would not hold a setting. I removed the hand crank, and made a dividing head type wheel with 8 spots for a spring-loaded pin to engage the height adjustment. So, with a considerable amount of machine retrofitting, I am now getting professional quality results. Conclusion: The machine as you receive it from Grizzly, is a heavy paperweight, but it can be retrofitted to give professional quality, repeatable results. If you have a metal lathe and a milling machine, along with the skills and time to make the parts needed, it can be salvaged. Don't bother asking the technical department at Grizzly.

      Performance

      I bought this with some hesitation because of the reviews that said how often it tripped the breakers. As I was getting started using this, it occurred to me that this is not a planer that takes off 1/16" or more at a time..... this machine takes off thousandths of an inch -which means that an eight of a turn of the crank is all it is going to do. With that in mind, I think this machine is just what it is designed to do. It will just take a bit of time to get it sanded.....I have to remind myself that Patienceis key.

      12 inch drum sander

      This is a nice small drum sander. I use it mainly for flattening segmented rings.

      Brushed brass

      bought this to finish brass to a brushed finish; worked right out of the box. No problems as of yet.
