Q&As

1 - 10 of 19 Questions

Q: how does it work?

1 Answer
  • Woodstream Team
A: The American Farm Works Woven Wire Fence Stretcher works by gripping the entire height of a woven wire or chain-link fence with its U-channel design, allowing the fence to be pulled evenly instead of pulling on individual wires. This helps create consistent tension across the fence and reduces sagging. To use it: Place the stretcher vertically over the loose end of the fence. Secure the fence wires inside the stretcher so it grips the full section of fencing. Attach a come-along, chain, winch, or other pulling device to the stretcher. Pull the fence until the desired tension is reached. Fasten the fence to the end post. Release and remove the stretcher. The stretcher is designed for 48–52 inch field fence and 36–48 inch chain-link fence, helping distribute the pulling force evenly across the fence for a tighter, more professional installation.

Not that easy to use after all

This is cumbersome. I thought it would be easier than the old 2x4 form been around for years. It wasn't. The bolts would'nt slip into the black metal piece easy. One would go in then 3 would pop out. Ended up using it twice then shelving it.

Stretching woven wire fence with a fence stretcher

Stretcher works as advertised. It's a bit cumbersome to connect, but once attached securely to the fence, it will apply tension evenly. I found that using two come along winches to apply tension to the stretcher worked best.

Fence puller/stretcher

We gave this a 3 star, this is our second one we have bought due to workmanship. The bolts break and are not replaceable. This product has doubled in price since the last time we purchased, this is another factor for giving it a 3 star it isn’t worth the price but when you need it, you have to purchase it.

Not worth the price, but it’s a decent idea.

We used to just screw two board together to sandwich fence. This tool has too many bolts you must loosen and two handles to remove before you can sandwich a fence. Without two people, it’s hard to line up the bolts and slide the steel part that holds fence secure when bolts are re-assembled on handles and the others are tightened. The problem is with the slot for the bolts. When the bolts are loose, the steel part is designed to slide and that’s where two people would help. Once it’s set up, it does work well. If you have multiple sections of fence to spread, use an impact tool or good ratchet to speed up process.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Heavy Duty Stretcher for Long Fence Runs

This is a heavy duty, durable fence stretcher best suited for longer fence runs. I used it to stretch 50, 75, and 100 foot sections of 2"x4" welded wire mesh as part of a 500' wooden post and four rail fence I'm constructing. It worked very well and doesn't damage the fence, as long as you don't dog down the four carriage bolts too much. I also attached it in the middle of fence sections without the need for cutting the fence. Since my mesh fencing was only 4' high, I chose to rearrange the carriage bolts and pulling harness brackets to get a straighter pull on my fence sections and didn't need to use the top carriage bolt. I read other reviews before purchasing this product. Poor reviews were clearly input by people that don't know how to use it properly. For example, the bolts for the pulling harness brackets only need to be snugged so the nut doesn't come off. You don't dog these two bolts down to contact the pulling bar which will damage the brackets. This stretcher is a bit clunky and does take some time to assemble for each pull. For the shorter runs, I followed a YouTube vid and made my own stretcher out of a 2x4 with nails driven through it which was quick and effective. This item is pricy, but I would buy it again for my applications. Happy fencing!

Yes, I recommend this product.
