Chicken Feed Type

Poultry feed is categorized in the following ways:

• Chicken starter feed: This type of chicken food is packed with protein, which accounts for 20-24% of the feed's total nutrition contents. It is meant for baby chicks and designed to meet their unique dietary needs. Some chick starter feed is medicated to prevent coccidiosis (a common intestinal parasite that affects young chicks). 
• Organic chicken feed: Chicken feed is organic if it is grown free of foreign substances, like pesticides, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), antibiotics, hormones and synthetic pesticides. 
• Chicken feed for improved laying: Also referred to as chicken layer feeds, this type utilizes a special formula intended for chickens laying table eggs (those consumed by humans). These layer feeds have extra calcium and an average of 16% protein, helping to ensure eggs are laid with strong shells. Improved laying feed is recommended for chickens starting at 20 weeks of age or at the time of their first eggs being laid. 
• Chicken feed for egg quality and shell thickness: These feeds are ideal for chickens whose eggs are being laid with weak shells, ultimately causing the eggs to break and rot before consumption. Calcium is the key ingredient in egg-quality chicken feed and shell-thickness chicken feed, as the nutrient supports strong eggshell formation.
