Q: Will this rake work efficiently for windrowing pinestraw?

  • A: The rake is designed to rake up grass clippings into rows. This is meant for grass 3” or shorter. It will collect other debris but might get caught up in the tines so you would need to “unclog” the tines from time to time.

Most Helpful Favorable Review

When used correctly..

When used correctly this rake works exactly as advertised. You must allow 20 or more inches between back rake wheels and the faster the better when pulling. This is a good dependable item and will last for years if taken care of.

Returned Item

I purchased this online for store pick-up and was really looking forward to it. I was disappointed that it didn't work out. I assembled it as per instructions and tried to pick up grass cuttings from having mowed a few days prior. Instead of leaving a row of clippings they piled up in between the rake ams to the point where the tine wheels would stop turning. The clippings were extremely dry and light. I had some questions as to whether I had installed the tine wheels facing in the right direction as the photo in the instructions was a bit hard to make out. I reversed the direction of the tine wheels and had the same results. I re-read the instructions and it recommends cutting the grass at 3". It's usually pretty hot here in Virginia and often quite dry and cutting at 3" doesn't allow for a deep root system so I usually cut at 3 1/2" or 3 3/4". But I went out and re-cut several acres at 3" to see if it helped. This also cut the clippings a second time making them smaller and finer. Trying the V rake again with a 3" cut gave me the same results. I went through the instructions again to see if I missed anything, I tried reversing the tine wheels again several times, no better. However, I did notice that the photo of the rake on the Tractor Supply showed more space between the inboard tine wheels. If I switched the lift arms left to right that would spread the rake arms out wider and allow more space between the inboard wheels as shown on the TSC website. I thought that might allow the cuttings to lay out in a row so I switched them. That did spread the rake arms wider and gave more space between the inboard tine wheels but the results were no better. During all of this trial and error several of the supplied carabiner type clips had broken in use. They were poor quality and not up to the task so I went to TSC and bought stainless replacements, more money spent. I called TSC customer support for advice hoping to be able to get this to work correctly, They gave me the phone # for the manufacturer. I spoke with the manufacturer and sent them photos and they said I was trying to rake too much grass. Seriously? Yes, that was the response. So if you are totally OCD about picking up tiny short little clippings and cut your yard several times a week, maybe this will work for you. But for me, with average cuttings from once a week mowing, here's the results. My local TSC in Warsaw, VA. which is great, cheerfully accepted the item back. In the future I'll use my mowing pattern and the side discharge on the zero turn to direct the cuttings in to piles to pick up.
