Q: I’m confused on how wood screws with washers go in. There are 8 holes and only 4 screws, 5 bolts. Parts ID said I should have 4 of each but directions show a need for 8. Are there more detailed instructions?

1 Answer
  • A: For the Veikous Elevated Planter Box (PG0102-01-2), the wood screws with washers are primarily intended to secure the side panels to the frame, while the bolts should be used for the structural weight-bearing joints on the legs. If you have eight holes but only four of each fastener, the manufacturer often designs the unit so that the four carriage bolts handle the primary leg-to-bed connections, leaving the four wood screws to anchor the center points or specific side slats where maximum stability is needed. You can find more detailed assembly diagrams on the Veikous Official Website or by viewing their instructional guides on the Veikous YouTube Channel.

Good to Go

Easy to build, just follow the directions. I nought 2 of them. The kit came with some extra hardware. None of the hardware was damaged, decent quality from China. The material is white cedar, semi-weatherproof and semi-insect resistant. That being said it is soft wood, I don't plan on attaching anything else to it. I used some 1/2" PVC to build a cage over it and keep the bugs off of the veggies we plant. I don't plan on painting or staining it, just leave it raw. I did add some casters to the legs so we can roll them around. We have a cement patio, then when the storms roll in, we can roll them under the overhead cover. A day or 2 after I built them, I put soil in them, no sag in the bottom and I filled them about 2" from the top. We are dropping some seeds in today for our first crop. So far so good. I am satisfied with them. If they work out, I may buy 1 or 2 more.

Mixed Feelings

The bed is sturdy and well-conceived, with positives such as drain holes, support cross-struts, and garden cloth for lining. I was disappointed that the cedar was not a high grade - lots of putty patches and splits in the boards (especially one of the legs), and even one gouge area that should have been puttied but wasn't. It can't be stained because of the putty, but it could be painted. Assembly was not for the faint of heart, but the instructions were clear enough. One of the four bolt holes in the legs simply did not match up so I could only use three, but it does feel stable nonetheless. Overall, I am happy with the product, just wish the quality of the wood had been better.

OK quality for the price

Not a precision engineered product, but given the price these are fine and look OK. The assembly instruction drawings aren't super clear. In Step 1-2 pay attention to the orientation of the legs (A1/A2) so that the hole for the long barrel bolt (5) is facing bottom panel (E), otherwise when you get to Step 2-2 you'll have to disassemble everything in order to connect the leg to the side panel. (Ask me how I know this.)

Yes, I recommend this product.

Nice raised bed

Seems of good quality = instructions are clear and easy to follow. Liner fits well . The bed seems sturdy enough to do the job, but would recommend staking at least 2 of the legs for insurance.
